Auf dem Gebiet der Darstellungstheorie von Algebren ist William Crawley Boovey ein einflussreicher Vordenker. Die Theorie übersetzt die Probleme abstrakter Algebra mit Hilfe von linearen Modellen und macht sie somit verständlich. Eine große Bedeutung hat sie in der theoretischen Physik. Auf ihr beruht z. B. die Vorhersage, dass Quarks existieren. Crawley-Boevey wechselt nach 15 Jahren in Leeds als Alexander von Humboldt Professor an die Universität Bielefeld. Sein Spezialgebiet ist die Darstellung gerichteter Graphen, so genannter Köcher, woran auch in Bielefeld intensiv geforscht wird.

 „There’s always new areas needing to be understood. It’s actually an explosion of development in mathematics. – The dream would be to understand the representations of so called wild quivers. In many ways, it’s considered a hopeless problem but I don’t believe it’s hopeless at all. I think really one can find ways of understanding those representations, classifying them in some way.“
