Heart of Titanium

Reportage ǀ 30 min ǀ 2002 ǀ TV arte ǀ Production Cine Plus ǀ Director & Producer Oliver Päßler | Camera Jens Staeder | Editing Stephanie Kloss

The blood pump INCOR, made of titanium with a magnetic rotor is a medical revolution. Small and very light, it can be placed into a patient´s chest. The high-tech-system supports his own weak heart until a donor´s heart can replace it. The film follows the testing of this new artificial heart over a period of 18 months, starting from lab and animal tests and ending up with the first operation on a patient. The success of the experiment is due to the surgeon Prof. Roland Hetzer from the German heart centre in Berlin.
